Texas A&M-Galveston student Jessica Bullard took home a gold, silver and bronze medal as a novice fencer at the annual Naomia Abbott Memorial women’s fencing tournament April 23 in the gym at the O’Connell School. Also taking home medals were Galveston fencers Kaitlin McGraw and Kathy Machol.
Bullard and fellow Sea-Aggie McGraw tied for the bronze in the novice epee event. Bullard took the silver medal in novice sabre. McGraw and Bullard had to face each other in the final of the novice foil, with McGraw taking silver and Bullard winning the gold.
Before their competitions McGraw and Bullard also entertained the fencers and spectators with a choreographed fight with broadswords.
Kathy Machol tied for the bronze in both veteran epee and veteran sabre. In both cases she tied with Nicole Trojanowski of Dickinson, a member of the Clear Lake Fencing Club. Another CLFC fencer, Susie Smith took the silver in veterans sabre.
In fencing, a novice is someone who has been fencing less than one year. A veteran refers to a fencer who is 40 years of age or older.
The Abbott Memorial, the only all-women’s fencing tournament in Texas, is named for Naomia Abbott who, with husband Everett, was a competitive fencer in Galveston during the 1950s. This year’s tournament included competitors from the University of Houston, Katy, Dallas and Ft. Worth.
On Saturday, April 14, the Galveston Fencing Club will hold its final tournament of the spring season, the Buccaneer Open. That tournament will feature mixed and women’s adult events, as well as youth competitions for fencers from ages 6 to 12.
The Galveston Fencing Club meets Monday and Wednesday evenings in the gym at the O’Connell School.
