Schlitzberger & Daughters Monument Company produces some of the finest memorials, crafted stonework and civic monuments in the country.
The company was founded in 1961 by Bobby Schlitzberger’s father, who made around 100,000 memorials in his lifetime. Though Schlitzbergers is a Houston-based company, it has strong ties to Galveston County. Bobby and Dianne Schlitzberger, both Texas City High School graduates — class of ’67, eventually took over operation of the family-owned company and created around 150,000 memorials during their time.
Recently, Schlitzbergers passed on to the next generation when daughters Maria Schlitzberger-Hall and Kimberly Schlitzberger were pleased to take over the family business.
“Most often, when I tell people what I do for a living the response is, ‘Oh, how sad’ or ‘Ick, how depressing,’” Maria said. “But I think there is something so special about spending time with my customers, hearing stories about their loved ones, and helping them through this process.”
Maria said one of the joys of her job is seeing the beauty of a life well-lived and to help memorialize that life.
“I have learned from my customers that how I live my life will affect my death, my memory, my ‘legacy,’” she said. “The sweetest stories of love and devotion always seem to start with, ‘He was so good to everyone’ or ‘she always put other people first.’ I get to hear stories of how this person or that person changed and improved lives and made a real difference in the lives of friends and families. I have learned from my customers that money will not make you happy, tangible items will not give you true joy and real love is earned by how we behave every day. I have wept with my customers and gone home a happier person at the end of my day, because through my customer I got to know someone wonderful today.
“I realize that death is fearful for most people, but I am honored to be allowed to share this experience with my customers.”
Although Maria and Kimberly are working on bringing Schlitzbergers up-to-date with technology — including computerized record-keeping — the company’s work will retain the same high quality at reasonable prices.
Schlitzbergers has won many awards for their fine craftsmanship. In 2008, they took home the Eugene H. Faehnle trophy through The American Institute of Commemorative Art, which is the top monument design award in North America.
Kimberly has been designing award-winning memorials for twelve years and is the proud recipient of the 2012 Memorialist of the Year Award from the Monument Builders of the Southwest. She is the past President of the Monument Builders of the Southwest, 2009-2011; and was recently inducted into the American Institute of Commemorative Arts, a prestigious honor, as she is only one of a very few individuals in Texas to be invited for membership.
