As hurricane season approaches, University Federal Credit Union (UFCU) provides you with information to help you prepare before a hurricane strikes.

Hurricanes pack a triple punch: high winds, soaking rains and flying debris. They can cause storm surges to coastal areas, as well as create heavy rainfall which in turn causes flooding hundreds of miles inland.

UFCU Insurance Services offers home, flood and windstorm insurance policies. For a free quote, email InsuranceServices@ufcu.org or call UFCU Insurance Services at 800-223-4197.

Insuring Coastal Properties Seminar

To learn more about UFCU Insurances Services, attend their Insuring Coastal Properties seminar on April 23 at Open Gates Conference Center at 5:30 p.m. The seminar will discuss topics such as:

• The correct dwelling limit for your home

• Basic home insurance coverages

• Liability and the homeowner

• Windstorm policy

• Flood policy

Seating is limited, visit ufcu.org to reserve your seat today.

Taking the necessary steps to protect your home and family before a hurricane strikes is the smartest plan. UFCU also encourages you to take steps to ensure your finances are in order long before local officials call for an evacuation.

Why should you prepare financially?

In the event of a disaster, ATMs and financial institutions might be unavailable for extended periods. If this happens, you should be prepared for a “cash only” environment until communications and electrical services are restored. Obtaining additional cash and managing your finances will be easier with direct deposit and electronic services.

Establish Direct Deposit with your employer, social security, or other federal agency.  Direct Deposit is automatic, secure and ensures that your paycheck is deposited into your UFCU account even if you’re not at work on payday. To sign up for direct deposit, simply give your employer your account number and UFCU’s Routing Number – 314977405.

Enroll in UFCU Online Banking and Mobile Banking. Online Banking and Mobile Banking offers the convenience of 24-hour banking from your home, office or even when you’re traveling. UFCU Online Banking is complete with free Bill Pay, Account Alerts and online account transfers, including to and from your accounts at other financial institutions. With Mobile Deposit, a feature of UFCU Mobile Banking, you can conveniently deposit checks from the comfort of home using your mobile device.

Apply for a UFCU VISA® Debit Card. Use your VISA Debit Card anywhere VISA debit cards are accepted; funds are drawn directly from your checking account. Your card also doubles as an ATM card for quick access to cash 24/7.  If you prefer an alternative to traditional checking, UFCU also offers the ABILITY™ VISA® Prepaid Debit Card. UFCU VISA Debit Cards and ABILITY Cards are available immediately at the UFCU Galveston Branch.

Apply for a UFCU Credit Card. Choose from four credit card programs, including Great Rate with fixed rates starting at 6.9%.  UFCU’s credit cards have no over-the-limit or cash-advance fees.  Online access to your credit card allows you to download full statements, set email alerts, make payments and perform numerous other functions.

Lastly, it is important to keep your contact information, including email address, up-to-date with UFCU.

What should you do before evacuating?

Be prepared at least five to seven days before officials call for an evacuation so you can get out without delay. Here’s how:

• Make arrangements to have needed cash and/or traveler’s checks on hand.

• Visit UFCU’s website at ufcu.org to locate Shared Branch and ATM locations on your evacuation route.

• Don’t forget to pack your UFCU Debit Card, ABILITY Card, Credit Card, and/or checkbook.

• Continue to visit ufcu.org and follow UFCU on Twitter and Facebook for alerts and updates regarding the conditions affecting UFCU facilities.
